About NAB

The Newport Academy of Ballet believes that every person can benefit from exposure to dance. We know that we must first teach a love of movement before we can teach the art form. Our youngest students begin with free flowing creative movement classes followed by Pre-Ballet. More formal training begins at the age of six. The Academy offers classes for all ages and skill levels in ballet, pointe, jazz and tap. There are many opportunities to gain performance experience for those who are interested, including a non-mandatory end of year performance.

Registrar

Eileen Stoops has been the registrar at NAB for many years. Her daughter Meighan, studied at the Academy. You will see her welcoming face almost everyday at the school. She is available to answer questions and help with almost anything you need. Eileen is also a superb costume mistress and creates all of the costumes for the NAB recital and the Island Moving Co. She is kind, warm and nurturing to all the students at NAB and she loves seeing the children progress from itty bittys to beautiful young ballerinas.

NAB’s Connection to
Island Moving Co

The Island Moving Co is a critically acclaimed professional contemporary ballet company that has it’s home in the NAB studios. Miki Ohlsen is the Artistic Director of both the Island Moving Co. and the Newport Academy of Ballet.

Many of the 10 professional dancers at IMC are teachers in the school. They are all highly experienced teachers and also masters at linking the art form to performance. There simply isn’t a better way to give your child a complete dance education.

There are many advantages to having a professional company associated with the school.

  • Your child might often catch the company rehearsing before their own class begins. Students from NAB also have the opportunity to audition for children’s roles in the IMC Nutcracker at Rosecliff and Mother Goose

  • IMC provides ample opportunity for the students to see professional dance right here in Newport. This exposure to the professional dance world makes the experience at NAB unique.

The company performs many times in Newport throughout the year and also tours across the US.

We hope you can join us at one or more of these performances.

The Director

MIKI OHLSEN founded Newport Academy of Ballet in 1979. As a young girl she studied Ballet at the State Ballet of Rhode Island and after attending URI moved to Amsterdam, the Netherlands and  graduated from the Nel Roos Fine Arts Academy with a degree in teaching and performance.  After performing with DANSGROEP KRISTINA de CHATEL for several seasons, Miki returned to RI and founded the Newport Academy of Ballet, home of the Island Moving Company. She is also the Artistic Director and founding member of the Island Moving Co.

For thirty years Miki and her staff of teachers have been providing dance education of the highest quality to children and adults from all over Rhode Island. With the Academys strong emphasis on classical ballet and the study of the art form, the school has provided countless hours of joy to those dancing for the sheer love of it and has trained many dancers who have gone on to professional careers. Miki has also led the creative team that designed the Creative Movement residency programs in the Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth schools. Her recent choreography has received critical acclaim and has been entered into choreographic competitions in Boston and New York.
